Get out your social calendars; next week has lots of possibilities.

The South Amherst Thursday Club, of which I am a member, is sponsoring a free concert Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. in the Munson Memorial Library. Refreshments will be served.

Black History Month will be celebrated Feb. 11 from 11-11:30 a.m. on the Town Common. Bring noisemakers. The town website says to spread the word.

Also on Feb. 11, the annual Winterfest , sponsored by the LSSE department, will be held at the Cherry Hill Golf Course from 1 to 6 p.m. Lots of activities are planned including the Best in Snow Dog Show and the Cardboard Classic race. Fireworks end the day.

Tickets are at the LSSE office in the Regional Middle School or at the site.

On Feb. 12, we celebrate the Founder's Day, the town's birthday. The Amherst Historical Society will present the annual Conch Shell Award at 2 p.m at the Jones Library. The event includes a lecture and refreshments.

Nancy Eddy and Rhoda Honigberg, both of Amherst, sent me a postcard of a lock on the Panama Canal, which they sailed through. They wrote that it is more impressive than they thought it would be. They can now cross that trip off their bucket list.

I have seen a rabbit, chicken, snake, squirrels and chipmunks in my backyard and know my Orchard Valley neighborhood has had a bear and coyote, which I have not seen.

Last week was a first — a fox strolled straight across my backyard going from one lot to the next. I didn't think to grab my iPad to take a picture. I was mesmerized by the animal.

It was not red but light brown with a great bushy tail.
