Reminder: we have to change our clocks again. Daylight Savings Time starts Sunday, March 11. Again check the paper to see which way to go. Those with electronic devices — smart phones or iPads — don’t have to worry since it is done automatically.

Garden report: the daffodil shoots are up 7½ inches. What a surprise when I went outside and saw them poking through the leaves. But I will not take away any leaves or mulch; it’s too early. Snow is predicted for this week.

Another surprise: I have three chipmunks running around the yard. Last year I had two.

Save the date: The 10th annual Empty Bowls fund raiser for the Amherst Survival Center will be held March 19 from 4-8 p.m. at the Pub Restaurant. Celebrity wait staff will serve soup donated by many local restaurants. Bread and salad will also be served.

Area potters have donated the bowls, which you get to keep. Tickets are $40 or $30 if you don’t want a bowl. Tickets are available at Hastings or the Pub. You can also get tickets online by visiting www.amherstsurvival.org/emptybowls.

The Greenfield Savings Bank is offering to provide additional matching funds.

I think it is presumptuous to call a student event a Blarney Blowout on March 2 when St. Patrick’s Day is March 17. Possible substitute titles: Dr. Seuss Blowout, since his birthday is March 2, or Lion Blowout, since March comes in like a lion.
