I was scheduled to serve as a poll worker for the early morning shift at Precinct 7 in the Crocker Farm School.
I brought the newspaper and several New Yorkers to keep me busy during the lulls. Imagine my surprise ( and delight) when I looked out the door at 6:50 a.m. and saw a line that stretched the length of the gym. The line at times reached beyond the stairs. When I left at 11:30 a.m. more than 550 residents had voted. My coworker and I agreed: We didn’t care who people voted for — the great thing was that they voted.
While I saw many friends and neighbors, there was no time to chat, so I have no news to report.
The community’s diversity was visible. Our ethnic, racial and language mix was evident and there were parents with children and senior citizens with canes. I’m sorry we ran out of voting stickers at 9:30 a.m. (We agree that the clerk’s office had more pressing issues to deal with than stickers.) Thanks to all who voted. Come again.

Tracey Levy, program director at the Amherst Survival Center, called me to invite everyone (via this column) to the center’s free annual Thanksgiving Dinner Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. She said guests will be invited to share their memories of the center since it will move to its new location Dec. 3. A formal opening is set for January. She said if people want to help they should contribute to the center’s capital campaign or donate supermarket gift cards.
I will be at the dinner. I love stuffing.
The Amherst Senior Center is also hosting a Thanksgiving meal Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Bangs Community Center on Boltwood Walk.
