Amherst award honors former Fort River School teacher

An award honoring Roger Wallace, who retired last spring after 38 years as a teacher at Fort River School, has been established for Amherst elementary school teachers.

A kickoff event attended by about 60 people was held Saturday and about $4,000 was raised to supplement $4,000 previously collected. The goal is to amass $25,000 to begin making an annual award of $750 in September, said Patricia Romney, one of the organizers.

A Roger Wallace Excellence in Teaching Committee has formed, and partnered with the Amherst Education Foundation. Donations can be sent to Box 3670, Amherst, MA 01004.

SAGE ADVICE: Amherst Regional High School alumni will help students navigate their college planning and their first year of college on Dec. 21.

The event will be at the ARHS library from 10:36 a.m. to 12:06 p.m. Teachers may sign up in Room 309 to bring their classes to the event, and individual students can sign up with their A-period teacher’s permission. The deadline for sign-up is next Wednesday.

Assistant Principal Miki Gromacki will moderate the session.

HONORED MUSICIANS: ARHS seniors Emelyn Bashour and Kylie Prutisto-Chang, who are violinists, and junior Kethrellan Peterson, a soprano, have been selected to participate in the All-Eastern Honors Ensembles, based on their performance in the all-state festival last March. They will perform in Hartford on April 7, 2013.

AEF OPPORTUNITY: The Amherst Education Foundation will participate next Wednesday in Valley Gives, an online fundraising campaign for nonprofits. The foundation, which funds out-of-budget programs in the schools, is one of 250 nonprofits involved in the 24-hour event, sponsored by the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts.

That group will add $1,000 to a random donor’s gift every hour throughout the day, and make cash prizes to the organizations that attract the most donors and raise the most money. So the Amherst Education Foundation is encouraging its donors to make their annual gifts that day by going to valleygives.razoo.com/story/AmherstEdFound.
