Route 9 from Hadley through Belchertown is the center of the western Massachusetts when it comes to soccer.

On Sunday and Monday, the Amherst Regional boys, Hopkins Academy boys, and Belchertown girls and boys claimed their respective championships at Westfield State University.

The Hurricanes finally broke through with a win over rival Ludlow in the Western Massachusetts Division 1 final Sunday. After a scoreless regulation and two overtime periods, Amherst beat the Lions 7-6 on penalty kicks.

The Golden Hawks won their first Division 3 title in nine years with a 3-1 victory over rival Smith Academy Monday.

The Belchertown girls cruised past Monson 4-0 Sunday in Division 2, while the boys used a late goal to sneak past Monument Mountain 1-0 that same day.

Other teams shined during the championship weekend.

In cross country, Mel Devoney was the individual champ and led Amherst to another girls D-1 title. Natalie Mako of Frontier Regional broke the meet record to win the Division 2 individual championship.

In field hockey, Frontier beat Mohawk Trail 2-0 to win a second straight crown, while in girls volleyball, Frontier won its eighth straight title with a 3-0 win over Mahar Regional.
