'House of Happy Endings' author to give talk Jan. 8

LEVERETT - Leslie Garis, author of the memoir "House of Happy Endings," will recount her experiences growing up in a family of authors during an event at the Leverett Library, 75 Montague Road, Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
Garis has written on literary subjects for national magazines and newspapers, including New York Times Magazine profiles of such writers as Georges Simenon, Rebecca West, John Fowles, Harold Pinter, Joan Didion and Susan Sontag.
Garis, whose grandparents were the authors of the children's books about Uncle Wiggly and the Bobbsey Twins, will talk about how her family was torn apart by mental illness.
The talk is funded by a grant from the Leverett Cultural Council.
