Network Amherst: The Lehrer Report

The first paper white opened Dec. 23 and the other nine bulbs were in full bloom a week later. When I go downstairs in the morning I am greeted by this sweet fragrance. What a treat!

Patty Appelbaum of Amherst, our former office manager, has an article, "Saint Francis in the 19th Century," in the December issue of the Journal of Church History: Studies in Christianity and Culture, which is published by the American Society of Church History. She teaches religion at Springfield College.

Abigail Majewski, the daughter of Cynthia and Daniel Majewski of North Plain Road in Sunderland, was named to the dean's list at Providence College in Providence, R.I., where she is a senior majoring in business management. She is co-captain of the women's volleyball team and received the Division 1 Independent All-Academic Honors for student athletes. She is a member of the National College Athlete Honor Society and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. She graduated from Frontier Regional High School.

Shirley Cowles of Amherst reports that there were 30 adults and two great-grandchildren at her house for Christmas dinner. The great-grandchildren are Robert Alexander Kopec and Laley Rose Crutch. She is also happy to report she didn't have to cook.

Robert Weiner, formerly of Amherst and now a political mover and shaker in Washington, sent his annual politically themed Christmas Card. This one featured him and his wife, Pat, all dressed up at an Obama Inauguration Ball.

Christopher Gere, the son of Claudia and David Gere of Leonard Road in Shutesbury and the grandson of Dr. Edwin and Doris Gere of Juggler Meadow Road in Leverett, was named to the dean's list in the College of Engineering at Villanova University in Villanova, Pa.

Eleni Karagiannis, the daughter of Aristotelis and Petroula Karagiannis of Wildflower Drive in Amherst, is a first-year student at Mount Holyoke College. She graduated from Amherst Regional High School.
