Sell promoted to captain
Amherst Fire Department firefighter Jennifer Sell, 32, was promoted to captain, the first woman to be named to an officer's position in the department. Sell, a 13-year veteran of the department, assumes the title March 11.
She joined the department in 1994 as a student volunteer at the University of Massachusetts and was hired as a career firefighter in 1997.
Sell, who lives in Belchertown, has an undergraduate degree in psychology from UMass and an associate's degree in fire science from Greenfield Community College.
She is a paramedic, a hazardous material technician with the state District 4 Team based in Chicopee and a member of the Hampshire Franklin Juvenile Firesetters Intervention Team.
In addition, she is a tactical paramedic with the Amherst and UMass police departments, a SAFE instructor, a recruit trainer for the UMass student volunteer firefighter force and a defibrillator evaluator and educator.
Time to register for baseball leagues
Registration for Amherst baseball leagues will be held March 9 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the University Drive Post Office and March 10 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the North Fire Station on East Pleasant Street. The registration is for Babe Ruth, Little League, Prep, Pee Wee and T-Ball leagues.
All candidates must register even though they participated last year. The fee is $40 with $35 for a second child and $30 for a third child. Registration cards must be signed by a parent at returned when registering or mailed to: Box 445, Amherst, MA 01004 by March 12.
Forms are available at the LSSE office in the Bangs Center or they can be downloaded from the Web site www.amherstbaseball.org.
All tryouts will be held at the Amherst College Cage on South Pleasant Street.
All candidates must attend both tryout sessions and wear sneakers.
The Little League tryout for 10-year-olds will be held March 17 from 8:15 to 10:15 a.m. and March 18 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
The tryout schedule for 11- and 12-year-olds is March 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and March 18 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Little League will open April 21 and 22.
The Babe Ruth League tryout for those 13, 14 and 15 will be held March 17 at 2 p.m. If a second tryout is needed the details will be announced on Saturday.
Babe Ruth will open April 27 and 28.
