Summer reading clubs

"Catch the Beat at your Library," was the theme of the statewide summer reading program that encourages children and young adults to read for fun. Summer reading clubs at the local libraries held parties for children who read and reported on books. The clubs are sponsored by the Friends of the Jones Library System and supported by the Western Massachusetts Regional Library System.

The Munson Memorial Library held its Annual Back-To-School Party last month in the library's garden, according to librarian Sue Hugus. Returning students were awarded books and prizes. Twelve members of the reading club recorded and wrote reviews of the books they read on the new on-line ReadsInMa.org program.

The annual North Amherst Library Summer Reading Club Party was held last month at the Mill River Recreational Center with performances by Roger Tinknell and Davis Bates, according to librarian Maggie Spiegel.

She said 72 children registered for the club and 53 children turned in their reading logs listing the books that were read. The children received congratulations, certificates and books for prizes for their participation.

* Sept. 18: Bay Path College, 8 a.m.; Mitchell College, 9 a.m.; University of Rhode Island, 11:30 a.m.; Mount St. Mary's University, 12:15 p.m.; Suffolk University, 1 p.m.; University of Buffalo, 1:45 p.m.

* Sept. 19: Swarthmore College, 8 a.m.; Quinnipiac University, 8:30 a.m.; University of Toronto and University of British Columbia, 1 p.m.; Yale University, 1:45 p.m.

Calendar

* The Instrument Rental Night will be held Sept. 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Regional Middle School.

* Western New England College in Springfield hosts a free college fair Sept. 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Alumni Healthful Living Center. Call 782-1321 for directions.

* The ARHS College Advising Program is sponsoring guest speakers Mike and Ben Coblyn, who will discuss "Athletes and College Recruiting" Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the ARHS Choral Room.

* Breakfast for parents and guardians of the ARMS Sapphire Team will be held Sept. 18 while the Crimson Team breakfast is Sept. 19. The meal begins at 7:45 a.m.

* Crocker Farm will hold a Welcome Back Picnic Sept. 19 at 5:30 p.m.

* The Wildwood Open House will be held Sept. 19 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Families who need child care must preregister by calling the office.

* Sept. 20 is a late start day. Classes will begin at 10 a.m. for regional secondary students.

* Fort River will hold a coffee with the principals Sept. 21 from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m.

* The Amherst School Committee will meet Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. in the high school library.

* The Shutesbury School Committee will meet Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.

* The ARHS Parent Center will meet Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in Room 13 at ARHS.

* The ARMS Family School Partnership will meet Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.

* The Fort River Parent Council will meet Sept. 20 at 8:30 a.m.

Lunch menu

MONDAY: Baked chicken nuggets, potato puffs, steamed carrots.

TUESDAY: Pasta with Italian meat sauce, green peas.

WEDNESDAY: Hamburger/cheeseburger/fish patty on bun, tossed green salad with light dressing.

THURSDAY: Nachos grande bar, tortilla chips with all the fixings, corn.

FRIDAY: School made cheese pizza wedge, fresh veggies with dip.

All meals include milk and fresh fruit or fruit cup.
