The Emily Dickinson Museum will hold its annual open house Dec. 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. to celebrate the poet's 177th birthday. The event is free and open to the public.
Visitors can tour the Homestead, the poet's birthplace and home at 280 Main St.; and the Evergreens, the home next door of her brother, Austin. The event includes refreshments, poetry readings and making bookmarks in honor of BookMarks, the Museums 10 celebration of the art of the book.
Musicians Steven Howland and Tim Van Egmond will perform traditional 19th century folk music from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
At 2 p.m., Barbara Dana and Cindy MacKenzie will sign copies of a book they edited, "Wider than the Sky: Essays and Meditations on the Healing Power of Emily Dickinson."
Dana is an actor and award-winning author. MacKenzie is a University of Regina English professor.
The first 177 visitors will receive a rose courtesy of an anonymous donor. The museum will be closed Dec. 9 through March 1, 2008, but will have special holiday hours Dec. 26 through Dec. 30 from noon to 4 p.m.
