Amherst promotes firefighter to captain

Amherst firefighter John Ingram has been promoted to captain in the fire department.
The promotion was effective Feb. 17 and Ingram was sworn in at a Town Hall ceremony last Wednesday by Town Manager Larry Shaffer.
He joined the department in 1988 as a call firefighter and was appointed as a career firefighter in 1993.
Ingram has an associate's degree in fire science from Greenfield Community College, an undergraduate degree in fire science and a master's in fire science and administration from Anna Maria College.
He graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy chief fire officer curriculum in 2000 and the academy's fire officer supervisory training course in 2002.
Ingram is an EMT-intermediate.
He leads the department's SAFE program that provides fire safety education to all fourth-graders in the public schools and has implemented a similar program with the elderly.
He is a member of Amherst Town Meeting and serves on the town's Agricultural Commission.
As captain, Ingram will supervise a fire/EMS crew out of the North Fire Station.
