Latin winners
ARHS students Tiffany Lee and Liam Hynes won gold medals, summa cum laude, for Latin V in the National Latin Exam, said Latin teacher Betsy Mathews. John Gao and David Goff won silver medals, maxima cum laude, and Ankur Sheel earned magna cum laude in the Latin V level.

Local musicians
Fifteen area musicians will perform with the Springfield Symphony Youth Orchestras at the Season Finale Concert at Springfield Symphony Hall May 18 at 3 p.m. They include: Luke Abdow, Kristin Andres, Nick Baskin, Kyra Birklein, Solomon Goldstein-Rose, Asa Julien, Hope Leary, Gayin Lee, Kailina Mastroianni, Richard Nguyen, Anna Perkins, Kylie Prutisto-Chang, Mariah Servos, Ellie Williamson and Emma Zyskowski.
Marsha Hassett and Jonathan Lam, the orchestras' conductors, will lead the Springfield Youth Sinfonia and Springfield Youth Orchestra in Ippolitov-Ivanov's "Procession of the Sardar"; Vivaldi's "Violin Concerto in A Minor "; Bizet's "L'Arlesienne Suite No. 2:" Dvor£k's "Slavonic Dance No. 1, 8 and 9" Bruch;'s "Violin Concerto in G Minor"; and Tchaikovsky's "Fifth Symphony." Concerto competition winners Harrison Adams, a violinist from Florence, and Emlyn Van Eps, a violinist from Deerfield, will be soloists for the Vivaldi and Bruch pieces.

AFD graduation
The Amherst Fire Department held its 13th graduation ceremony last week for the 251 fourth-graders from Amherst, Leverett, Pelham and Shutesbury that completed the SAFE (Student Awareness of Fire Education) program.
Applications accepted
The Amherst High School Laboratory Preschool is accepting applications for the September 2008 school year and limited part-week openings for the remainder of this year. This full-day preschool serves as the learning site for the Amherst High School Child Study classes. Children must be 3 years old to attend. Calendar
* The Crocker Farm ice cream social will be held May 16 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $2.
* The annual ARHS Theater Company Student Written Play Festival will be held May 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens.
* The Regional Middle School Band 7 and 8 will perform May 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the ARMS auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.
* The Leverett staff appreciation lunch will be held May 21 at 1:30 p.m. For information or to volunteer to set up, serve or clean up, call 549-3640.
* A potluck retirement party for Fort River Principal Russell Vernon-Jones will be held May 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the school playground. To help with set up and clean up, call Catherine Sanderson at 256-4977.
* June 6 is the deadline to register for the second annual Mark's Meadow read-a-thon to benefit the school library. Forms are available at the school.

THURSDAY: Hamburger or cheeseburger on a bun, baked potato wedges, steamed carrots, watermelon.
FRIDAY: School made cheese pizza wedge, fresh veggies with dip.
All meals include milk and fresh fruit or fruit cup.
