AMHERST — An Amherst ambulance was damaged, and two vehicles were destroyed, following a crash on Belchertown Road Tuesday morning, Amherst Fire Chief Walter “Tim” Nelson said.

The ambulance, which was transporting a patient to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, was sideswiped when a vehicle that attempted to pass it hit another vehicle head-on at around 10:15 a.m.

Nelson said one of the people in those vehicles was brought to the hospital for treatment.

When an emergency vehicle has its lights activated, Nelson said drivers should pull over and not use it as an opportunity to pass.

Nelson said the ambulance is still operable, but it will need repairs at a body shop.

“At some point there will be an ambulance out of service when it gets repaired,” Nelson said.
