AMHERST — A 19-year-old Amherst woman who threw a cup of coffee from the vehicle she was riding in onto another vehicle Monday afternoon is facing a disorderly conduct charge from Amherst Police, even though she claimed to responding police officers that her actions were a “political statement.”

Amherst officers were contacted by the driver of a Jeep at around 2 p.m. who said he was at the intersection of South East and College streets when his vehicle, which has a flag displayed from its rear, was struck by the full cup of coffee.

The suspect vehicle was located a short time later on Wildflower Drive, where police issued the driver a traffic citation for allowing her passenger to litter from a moving vehicle.

The passenger explained to police that both she and the driver were offended by the flag on the Jeep and were making a political statement by hitting it with the hot beverage.
