Goodbye, John, and enjoy Florida

I am writing this letter to mark the departure of our long time state Rep John Scibak. He’s moving to Florida and retiring after a long career of public service.

Unlike many of our representatives in Boston and Washington, John knew where Hadley was and what we needed. He came to Town Meetings and Select Soard meetings regularly (cruel and unusual punishment) and he was there for us when we needed him most. He helped save the mountain, fix the dike, repair the bike trail, when we needed new police cars and repair the dam at North Hadley pond. The list goes on and on.

But I digress.

We’re going to miss him and he says that he’ll miss us. He said at his goodbye ceremony in Hadley that we were his favorite town, but the truth is that he says that to all the towns he represented.

What I don’t understand is why he’s going to Florida when in a few years, because of global warming, Florida is going to come here. He said that he wants to help spread the “Blue Wave” to Florida but sea level rise will soon be bringing it’s own blue wave to Florida with or without him. Of course his condo is on the 4th floor, so he should be OK. Actually I’m not worried about him living in Florida despite what’s happening because if he could survive Hadley politics he shouldn’t have a problem at all with alligators and snakes.
