Around Amherst: Town Meeting nomination forms available

AMHERST — Residents interested in running for townwide office and Town Meeting seats can pick up nomination forms at town clerk’s office at Town Hall.

Forms must be turned in by 5 p.m. Feb. 6 to get on the March 27 ballot, with 50 signatures of registered voters needed for the townwide positions, and just one signature necessary to run for Town Meeting.

Positions available include one three-year term on the Select Board, two three-year terms on the School Committee, two three-year terms on the Jones Library trustees, a one-year position on Amherst Housing Authority, a five-year Amherst Redevelopment Authorty, moderator for one year and Elector under the Oliver Smith Will for one year.

To be eligible to vote in the election, which will also feature a recommendation from the Charter Commission to change the form of government, registered by March 7.

Snow shovelers sought

With snow season likely coming soon, the Amherst Senior Center is seeking people interested in removing snow and ice at the homes of senior citizens.

Anyone interested in providing this service should contact Senior Center Director Nancy Pagano at 259-3114.

Background checks will be completed before referrals occur.

CDBG hearing

Amherst is again designated a mini-entitlement community by the state’s Department of Housing and Community Development, meaning the town will receive up to $825,000 in Community Development Block Grant money.

With money available for housing, community development projects and social service activities benefiting low-and moderate-income citizens, the town’s CDBG Adbvisory Committee will hold a hearing Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Town Room at Town Hall

The hearing is mandated so that can receive comments and suggestions and update the draft 2018 Community Development Strategy, which summarizes the town’s master plan and will help the committee determine priority projects that should be undertaken and the target areas and neighborhoods where projects take place.
