Five College Faculty Dance: Collective Tissue

The Five College Dance Department and the Hampshire College Dance Program unite to present “Five College Faculty Dance: Collective Tissue” at the Main Studio Theater of the Music and Dance Building at Hampshire College. The Feb. 28-Mar. 3 event will include artistic contributions from faculty and dancers from each of the Five colleges, including video installations, photography and live dance performances. Mo Willems: Wordplay

Through March, Mo Willems’ “Wordplay” art installment will be on display at R. Michelson Galleries in Northampton. In collaboration with Northampton’s Arts Night Out, an opening reception takes place Friday, March 9 from 6-8 p.m. In the words of Willems, “This collection of recent drawings is an attempt to grapple with words’ power while retaining a sense of playfulness. Playfulness has power, too.” Sale proceeds from Willems’ collection will be donated to The Center for New Americans, the Northampton education center that provides resources for adult immigrants, refugees and migrant community members. The Big Broadcast!

At Mount Holyoke College’s Chapin Auditorium on Saturday, March 3, catch two performances of “The Big Broadcast,” a revival performance of a live, 1940s radio show. At 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., the show will feature Mount Holyoke College Big Band, Vocal Jazz, and Chamber Jazz Ensembles doing their renditions of swing music and standards from the Great American Songbook. Meterologist Brian Lapis from WWLP-TV in Chicopee will be reprising his role as emcee “Fred Kelly” for the 11th consecutive season with Mark Gionfriddo, who will be directing as “Matt Morgan.” Ticket prices range from $20-25 for general admission to $10 for student and senior discounts. Age of Anxiety

University of Massachusetts faculty pianist Files Vonsattel will be performing Leonard Bernstein’s “Symphony No. 2: Age of Anxiety” with the UMass Symphony Orchestra on Thursday, March 8. The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the UMass Fine Arts Center concert hall and will be conducted by assistant professor and director of orchestral studies at UMass, Morihiko Nakahara. Along with “Age of Anxiety,” the orchestra will also be performing “High Roller” by Missy Mazzoli and Beethoven's “Symphony No. 7.” Admission for adults is $10 and senior citizens and students are $5. UMass students can attend free of charge.
