AMHERST — The Leisure Services and Supplemental Education department, which oversees various sports programs and community activities such as the Fourth of July celebration and Halloween Fest, has a new director.

Town Manager Paul Bockelman announced Oct. 30 that Barbara Bilz, interim director since April following the retirement of Linda Chalfant, will take on the leadership role on a permanent basis.

Bilz, an Amherst resident who has worked for the town since 2000, said in a statement that she is grateful for the opportunity.

“I’m very fortunate to have an amazing team of staff and volunteers at LSSE and we are all committed to providing the highest quality recreational programming and facilities for our community,” Bilz said.

Bilz served as director of Development and Community Programs and then as assistant LSSE director since 2008, managing the aquatics programs and Cherry Hill Golf Course and running Winterfest. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts and a master’s degree in recreation and parks administration from Indiana University.

The move was supported unanimously by the LSSE Commission, whose chairwoman Meg Rosa, said in a statement that it has been a pleasure to work with Bilz on recreation programs.

“She has brought new energy and responsiveness to the department. As a committee, we feel more connected to the department and have been impressed with her efforts in leading LSSE toward the future,” Rosa said.
