AMHERST — Delays and detours are taking place along Belchertown Road this week and into the fall as Caracas Construction begins installing storm drainage, reconstructing sidewalks and eventually repaving the road.

Work on a section of Belchertown Road, also known as Route 9, began Tuesday between the Cumberland Farms gas station at 35 Belchertown Road to the entrance to Colonial Village near 90 Belchertown Road.

As the project began, traffic heading west toward Amherst center was detoured onto Stanley Street, reconnecting with Route 9 via South East Street, while vehicles heading east toward Belchertown were backed up along College Street.

The work is expected to be ongoing through October with periodic detours and detail officers directing traffic.
