Ting named temporary police chief in Amherst

AMHERST — Capt. Gabriel Ting, who has overseen operations for Amherst Police since early 2019, began serving as temporary police chief on Saturday.

Town Manager Paul Bockelman named Ting to the position Friday upon the retirement of Chief Scott Livingstone.

Ting has been a member of the department since April 1997, handling patrol duties until his promotion to detective in September 2004. He became a sergeant six years later and six years after that a lieutenant.

A 1991 Amherst Regional High School graduate, he graduated from the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Academy in 1997. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts and a master’s degree in criminal justice from Western New England College.

Livingstone has served as police chief since 2009.

Bockelman has indicated that before a permanent successor is hired, a search will include significant community engagement.
