AMHERST — An employee at a downtown restaurant struck in the head with a beer bottle, and a supermarket employee attacked by a customer were both victims of assaults that occurred in Amherst over the weekend, according to Amherst police.

Among the 272 calls for service, which included several fights and a number of people being minors in possession of alcohol and violating the town’s open container bylaw, officers responded to Garcia’s restaurant, 51 East Pleasant St., at 8:34 p.m. Saturday. There, an employee had been hit by a thrown Bud Light bottle.

A short time later, a 22-year-old Shrewsbury man, who fled the scene, was arrested on a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, while a second person is also being summoned to court on a charge of assault and battery, police said.

About seven hours earlier, at 1:45 p.m. at Big Y Supermarket, an employee was reportedly grabbed in the neck and flung around by a shopper for an unknown reason, after he had offered to get her a small cart in which to put her groceries. The assailant, a 63-year-old New Salem woman believed to be intoxicated, is being summoned to court on a charge of assault and battery, police said.

Several reported fights also took place over the weekend.

On Nutting Avenue at 1:04 a.m. Saturday, officers were informed about loud banging and angry yelling, and people possibly trying to break into the home to start a fight. During the incident, a bag filled with lacrosse gear and a lacrosse stick was taken from the porch, with a 19-year-old North Andover man arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and larceny under $1,200.

On Saturday at 12:26 a.m. at a downtown restaurant, two men were reported fighting by throwing pizza at each other. They fled before police got there.

Another fight occurred at 11:40 p.m. outside the downtown bars, with a possible injury, though two women who had been knocked to the ground declined medical attention.

And at 3:07 p.m. Sunday, a 44-year-old South Hadley man was arrested outside the downtown bars on charges of disorderly conduct and assault and battery after throwing things, being violent and harassing other patrons.

While it didn’t develop into an altercation, officers at 4:51 p.m. Saturday went to a North Amherst store where an employee reportedly got upset at a man wearing a jacket with a Confederate flag patch. The clerk allegedly cursed at the man and his girlfriend, who were trying to buy bottles of Gatorade and slices of pizza, and then shoved their food across the counter in a hostile manner, police were told.

The employee admitted to police that he was upset by the sight of the Confederate flag, even if it is an allowed form of expression. The customers told police they intend to file a complaint with store management over their treatment.
