Senior Will Ortyl of the South Hadley hockey team was recognized last month as the Boston Bruins-MIAA Sportsmanship Award recipient from the Fay Division.

Ortyl was selected by representatives of the league and honored with other winners on March 7 during a Bruins game.

“Will is a role model to all around him,” South Hadley coach Larry Camus said. “He is a selfless person who leads by example. A true student-athlete who is respectful of his teammates, opponents, officials, coaches and the game of hockey. It has been a privilege to know and coach him. He embodies all that sportsmanship is about, both on and off the ice.”

The two-year captain was a four-year starting defenseman for the Tigers. He helped lead the team to the 2017 Western Massachusetts Division 3A championship. After missing the playoffs in 2018, South Hadley returned in 2019 and finished 13-6-2.

Ortyl has been a vice president and treasurer of his class. The National Honor Society member will be attending Boston College.

Pioneer Regional senior Aurel Pydych, who played defense for Greenfield, was selected from the Wright Division. Minnechaug defenseman Austin Kareta was the Berry Division winner.
