AMHERST — After serving as interim principal at Fort River School since 2016, Diane Chamberlain will have the temporary tag removed from her title.

On Feb. 14, Chamberlain was named the school’s new principal by Superintendent Michael Morris.

Chamberlain’s selection followed a recent national search that drew numerous applicants, including one other finalist, Emmet Conroy, an assistant high school principal in Arlington, Virginia.

Many Fort River staff and families who attended forums Feb. 9, at which both candidates were interviewed and met the public, supported Chamberlain’s appointment. Included in this feedback were comments that she “understands how to address the whole student and has a vision for the future,” and “Fort River deserves her amazing leadership, vision and knowledge.”

Prior to taking the interim post, Chamberlain was assistant principal at Fort River, administrator at the secondary level high and middle schools and worked as a teacher in multiple special education settings.

Chamberlain earned a master’s degree in education at San Francisco State University and a certificate of advanced graduate studies at Saint Mary’s College of California.

Fort River has been without a permanent principal since Bobbie Finocchio left in June 2016.
