Betsy Hartmann: Anti-Jones camp has gone far enough

Thursday, May 06, 2021

Enough is enough. The attempt to thwart the much needed renovation and expansion of Amherst’s Jones Library and to turn away millions of dollars in state funding has gone far enough.

At a time when we finally have progressive leadership at the national level calling for public investment in education and infrastructure, it is deeply ironic that at the local level in Amherst a small but vocal group of citizens is trying to deny the rest of us a library which will much better serve the needs of our diverse community.

The anti-library petition and movement harkens back to the bad old days of conservative anti-tax and anti-public investment politics. In the interest of equity, democracy, accessibility, and social justice, including inter-generational justice, the Jones Library project must move forward with speed.
