Clare Bertrand: Time is now to seize chance to invest in Jones Library

Wednesday, March 31, 2021

It is my hope the Town Council will vote yes on the funding for the Jones Library project.

In our town logo we have a book and a plow. Amherst shows its values by where it spends its money, and indeed by supporting this library project, we are putting our money where our mouth is. I strongly believe this project is needed at this time and we must not give up the chance to leverage the state money to pursue the best project possible.

Some contend that the school project should be first in line and that by voting yes on this library project it is “jumping the line.” Sadly, the school project was kicked out of line and had to start over. Thankfully it is in the pipeline again, but we are years away still. So, let us not repeat history and “kick this library project out of line” because of shortsighted thinking.

All of our large capital projects have been known and discussed for years. Obviously in Amherst there are going to be differing opinions. And in fact, that makes for better projects in the end. But the time is now to seize this investment and say yes to this expansion at the Jones Library.

The entire community will benefit from this project. This pandemic has highlighted the need and we must not shrink from the responsibility before us.
