Daniel Ordorica: Amherst Democratic Committee outlines its beliefs

Thursday, April 28, 2022

The Amherst Democratic Town Committee issues the following statement drafted at our Building Unity and Taking Action Conference held Feb. 27:

“We, Democrats of Amherst, Massachusetts, stand united in our beliefs in: 1) Individual Rights: We believe each person has the right to participate fully in the shared leadership of our democracy. 2) Equality: We believe all people have equal worth and dignity and that our civic institutions must treat everyone fairly and with respect. 3) Community: We believe in our individual and collective responsibility to care for each other, our democracy, our planet, and for each succeeding generation. 4) Democracy: We believe that to secure these democratic values, a representative government under law is necessary. We reject the ongoing Republican policies that undermine these democratic ideals, and we condemn the current Republican assault on American institutions as evidenced by the January 6, 2021 attempted coup and the subsequent efforts by the vast majority of Republican leaders to minimize, downplay, and legitimize that event. We recognize that in a democracy the will of the majority is translated into political priorities through voting in elections, not assaults on the people’s representatives; and that the November 2022 elections will be the next great test of our democracy following the 2020 elections. And so, we pledge to work in common towards realizing our values through the political process; to publicize the importance of this year’s elections; to welcome people who share these beliefs into the Democratic party; and to join with our friends, family and neighbors in voting Democratic on Nov. 8, 2022. To all who agree, we call on you to join us in this effort. Democrats in Amherst can get involved at amherstmademocrats.org; our next meeting is May 12, at 7:30 p.m., on Zoom.”
