Jon McCabe: Rejuvenate the Jones now

Thursday, October 21, 2021

There are more reasons to follow through on the Jones Library renovation and expansion plan than I can address in a single letter. So here are just a few.

It is proven fact that renovated libraries attract a significant increase in patronage, as much as 30 to 50 percent more. People are generally curious about an updated facility and want to check it out. More visitors to the Jones means more visitors to our downtown, our cultural district and our businesses that have suffered through COVID.

A renovated Jones will provide wonderful new spaces for children, teens and English language learners. As an old friend of the Jones, Rich Morse, once quipped at Town Meeting, “I just know that sometime during the 21st century, Amherst will build a 21st century library.” I second this thought, and will add that I just know that sometime before my 11-year-old child goes off to college, she and her friends will have a safe and inviting teen space at the Jones to hang out in after school and on the weekends.

The time to fix the Jones is now.
