Jonathan Plant: Vote ‘Yes’ on ‘game-changing’ plan

The lively discussions about the new Amherst Library project, and the issues around its costs, have me thinking about the value to communities libraries can have.

My father and mother helped initiate the plan for the first public library in our small upstate New York town, with a small donated space in town hall, and a volunteer staff. Its success eventually led to an expanded site with town funding — and a place that brought townspeople together as never before.

It also inspired me to build a 45-year career in publishing. The new Amherst plan, if passed, will greatly enrich our community in many ways with its combination of sustainability, technology and wide-ranging activities. I urge all our residents to vote “Yes” on this game-changing plan.
