Kevin J. Noonan: New Craig’s Doors leader happy to be ‘home’

Friday, October 18, 2019

I’m writing to thank the Craig’s Doors board for allowing me to return to direct this fine agency, which provides life sustaining services to people who are homeless in Amherst.

The steady approach of the winter wind will make it nearly impossible to survive frigid nights on our streets. This said, I’m confident there are no obstacles which will distract us from opening Craig’s Place, our seasonal shelter, on Nov. 1, nor keeping it open through April 30.

I say this because we do not do this alone. I’m so grateful to the donors and volunteers from our community and for two compassionate congregations which open “their doors” to Craig’s Doors. First Baptist Church graciously shares space each night with people who are homeless and the Unitarian Universalist Society of Amherst, my own spiritual home, partners to serve weekly breakfasts.

I moved to Amherst in 1991, but I recently enjoyed “exploring” North Carolina. I’m very happy to be home. I believe T. S. Elliott said it better than I can: “We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”
