Peter M. Haas: UMass needs an impartial board as it moves toward decarbonization

Thursday, April 28, 2022

It is wonderful that UMass Amherst is going carbon neutral by 2032. If UMass is to truly provide a model for other universities, it must apply best practices for decarbonization.

Most importantly, this includes having an impartial independent advisory board which can verify that goals are truly being met in the best possible way. Without such an advisory board, UMass will suffer from skepticism about greenwashing.

In addition, UMass may be able to benefit Amherst’s decarbonization efforts by modeling best practices and selling clean energy to the city.
