Sarah Serwa: Concerned about costs

I am voting “No” on the Jones Library remodel. While I love the library and have supported it financially in the past, I don’t think that this is the right renovation at this time. The Town Council has voted to support five new construction projects — the Jones library, the South Amherst Fire station, a new Department of Public Works building, a new elementary school and an $11.5 million renovation of the Centennial water treatment plant.

I think it is unlikely that all of these projects will be supported by town residents. I think people need to be aware that if they vote “Yes” on the Jones there is a significant likelihood that some of the other projects will not be funded. I am also concerned that if all five projects are approved, many residents who live on fixed incomes will decide to leave the town.

As we have seen in the past, when owner-occupied houses go on the market they are frequently turned into rental units.
