Bill Ennen: Another busy town clean-up

Published: 04-12-2023 7:33 PM

It was a cold and rainy this past Saturday, but neighbors came out in good numbers to pick up the trash along Hadley’s roads. Many, many thanks to our tireless leaders, Jack and Claire Czajkowski. A big shout out to the many students from Hopkins Academy who joined the effort. Also, another big shout out to Sherri at the Hadley Transfer Station for demonstrating such good will on a raw, wet day. Thank you to Home Depot for the supplies and Tandem Bagels for the treats!

My wife Nancy Bandman and I have made the Hadley clean up an annual event. We concentrate on Huntington Road between Route 47 and the solar farm access road. Every year we gather dozens and dozens of Green Apple Smirnoff nips and beer cans in a one-quarter mile stretch. This year was no exception. Maybe someone reading this letter knows the person who is drinking their way through Hadley on what would seem to be a daily basis? Maybe there is a liquor store owner who knows this individual? Is it too much to ask that this person not throw their waste out the window?

Maybe it’s time to ban nips as these were a ridiculous number of items we picked up overall. I hit the wall physically after about four hours. I was standing next to the North Maple Street exit from McDonald’s at Route 9. There is a small area behind the utility pedestals that was just too overwhelming with fast food packaging waste for me venture into. Maybe McDonald’s can take care of this mess? Until Next Year.
