Matthew Cain: Does APEA support Amherst?

The Amherst Pelham Education Association (APEA) goes too far in the March 25 Gazette [“Union: Don’t vote for school until contract done”]. APEA asked the community to hold off on a “yes” vote for the elementary school building project until they receive a fair contract. Proponents of the APEA have signs on their lawns that say, “Support Amherst Educators.” My question is, “Does the APEA support the Amherst community, and most importantly, Amherst students by taking this stand?”

As a parent of a student at Amherst Regional High School, I am beginning to wonder if the APEA deserves the community’s support if they ask voters to sit out on May 2nd. In my opinion, a new school building for generations of Amherst students is in line with APEA’s interests. I hope that the APEA will reconsider their position and fully support the school building project.
