Nina M. Scott: Wisdom on values

I wanted go congratulate the Gazette on the splendid editorial cartoon in the Oct. 22 edition, “Would you like lies with that?”
Our tense pre-election time is not easy to live through. I was a child in Nazi Germany. My father, an American citizen, opted to stay because my mother, who had become stateless on marrying my father, would not have been allowed to leave. He was incarcerated, but because we were not Jewish, lived through this ordeal.
After the end of the war we emigrated to the U.S. I was sent many books about Germany by my late best friend. I picked up one a few days ago, dealing with Hannelore (Loki) Schmidt (1919-2010), the wife of former chancellor Helmut Schmidt. Near the end of her life she cooperated on a book of interviews about her past.
She was asked about her ultimate values and named two: trustworthiness and honesty. I cannot but agree with her wholeheartedly.
