The Land of Sweets

“The Nutcracker,” performed by the Bolshoi Ballet, will be screened in HD Sunday at 12:55 p.m. at the Amherst Cinema, 28 Amity St, Amherst.

On Christmas Eve, Marie’s wooden nutcracker doll transforms into a prince and sweeps her away on a magical journey. The ballet is choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Stayin’ alive

Frank Capra’s classic film “It’s a Wonderful Life” will be shown Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 24 at 1 p.m. at Amherst Cinema.

On Christmas Eve in 1946, George Bailey (James Stewart) finds himself in financial ruin, contemplates suicide and wonders if things would be better for everyone else if he’d never been born. But then his wingless angel, Clarence Oddbody, steps in to help.
