Yom Kippur greetings to all our Jewish friends and neighbors.

Mary Hough of Amherst gave me a card of the Eremo delle Carceri, a small hermitage near Assisi, Italy. The hermitage is in a steep forest gorge at the Monte Subasio in Umbria, she wrote. She went on a pilgrimage with 26 others to various sites reflecting the lives of St. Francis and St. Clare.

Julie McNiven, daughter of Sandy and Becky McNiven Amherst, will be a guest star on “NCIS LA” on Sunday, Oct. 8. The show is on CBS at 9 p.m. and should be the season’s second episode.

I have watched the construction of the new Tappan Zee Bridge as I have traveled to see my family in Maryland for the past few years. Each time I marveled at the quick rate of progress. As I crossed the Hudson River this past week I drove on the new bridge! Since I had to focus on driving, I was unable to get the full effect of the angled cables. I think eastbound is still on the original structure, so I may be able to peek then.

Birthday wishes can still be sent to Peggy Roberts of Amherst, who celebrated her 90th birthday recently.

The Block Party, sponsored by the Business Improvement District, will be held Oct. 4 from 5 p.m. until the last song is sung, the food is gone, the dancers takes off their shoes — or 9 p.m. Hope you all can stop by; it’s a great community event.

Meanwhile, we need to crank up the fans and air conditioners, and empty the ice trays. What a blast of hot air this week.
