SUNDERLAND — The next election in town will be held in a different location.

The Select Board voted unanimously last week to move the polling location from the elementary school to the library.

Town Clerk Wendy Houle explained the idea has been discussed for a few years.

“There’s a few reasons why. One is, it seems like the last five years we’ve had a population in Sunderland that are having a harder time getting into the school and making their way down the hallway and into the gym,” she said during the Select Board meeting, adding that “during primaries or when school is in session … there’s not very many parking places.”

She said she will notify residents with an announcement that will be sent out with the census.

Select Board member Tom Fydenkevez said the most recent election “proved beyond a doubt that it wasn’t a good thing (to hold an election at the school).”

“Fortunately, the town clerk has been planning for this for a number of years,” he said.

Select Board Chairman Scott Bergeron said the town will see how the first election goes and make adjustments as necessary. The next election in town will be the state primaries next year.
