Good news: it is now light after 5 p.m. The days are getting longer.

I received two postcards from folks who went to the Rose Bowl in California.

Guilford, Susan, Corinne and Jessica Mooring of Hadley sent greetings via a 3-D card of Disneyland characters. Guilford is the town’s Department of Public Works head.

Joan and Allen Hanson of Shutesbury sent a card of Bighorn sheep in the desert. The couple worked on floats for the parade. They wrote that the “decorating process is amazing starting with thousands of buckets of flowers, seeds, greens... and the scent of the flowers is uplifting.”

They expressed their pride in the University of Massachusettss Marching Band. They also noted the weather was sunny and mild.

Joan told me she could find no postcards of the parade.

I also received a postcard from Edward Markey, our U.S. senator. However, his doesn’t count for the postcard contest since it wasn’t sent from a trip. He did invite me, and perhaps others, to a Town Hall Meeting Jan. 28 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Regional Middle School.

I have a feeling he won’t spring for coffee as our Town Manager Paul Bockelman does for his listening sessions.

Many thanks to the cast, crew and volunteers of “Beauty and the Beast,” sponsored by Amherst Community Theater. It’s a show worth seeing and performances continue this weekend at Bowker Auditorium, UMass.

Thanks are also due to the public works departments in all our area towns for dealing with snow, ice, broken water mains and burst pipes in extreme temperatures.
