I always saved can tabs to give to Doris Holden, who donated them to a hospital. That’s just one example of her many volunteer activities that enriched our communities. Sincere condolences to her family and the many organizations she gave her time and talents to.

We intersected via the League of Women Voters and Woman’s Club. She was also a loyal member of our cribbage group and was an excellent player.

To list all her efforts and awards would take many columns. Everyone loved her.

We also mourn author and professor Julius Lester. He gave the best speech at his son Malcolm’s graduation from Amherst Regional High School.

Feb. 14 offers some related thematic events. It’s Valentine’s Day, which has a heart theme. The heart pumps blood, so there is a blood drive at the South Congregational Church from 2-7 p.m. And it’s Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, a time when people give something up. Donating blood is a good sacrifice.

Jeanne Espositio of Amherst sent me the notice about the blood drive. She said the Red Cross sent an email saying her blood helped someone in New Hampshire, near where her sister lives. She asks, “Who will your blood help?”

Call 800-733-2767 or email redcrossblood.org to make an appointment.

The South Amherst Thursday Club, of which I am a member, is sponsoring a concert with musician Kevin Collins, Thursday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Munson Memorial Library. It’s free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served by some very good bakers.

Surprise! I am going to be on television. I will appear live on WWLP’s Mass Appeal on Feb. 8 talking about the Amherst Cribbage Tournament. I did mention that I don’t have cable and don’t watch television. But Danny New, who called me, said he can show me how to stream it on my iPad. He wants me to play a game of cribbage and talk about the tournament, all in five minutes.

If any one knows how to tape the show, can you do so and let me see it? Thanks.
