The hoses are drained and put away. The outside water faucet has been turned off. The tomato cages were removed from the raised beds. The hanging plants are grounded.

The next fall project is raking leaves, after they fall from the trees.

Then we wait for the first snow.

The ABC (A Better Chance) Annual Fall Foliage 5K walk and run is Oct. 20. Register at 9 a.m. on the Common. The run begins at 10:30 a.m. If you can’t participate donations are welcome. Send checks, payable to ABC, to Box 5000, Amherst. Thanks.

The League of Women Voters, of which I am a member, is sponsoring a Candidate Forum Oct. 23 at the Regional Middle School Auditorium. It will be in three segments with the district races bracketing the at-large candidates. The district 1,2,3 segment begins at 6 p.m. The at-large segment at 7:20 p.m. The district 4,5 segment begins at 8:20 p.m.

The Friends of the UMass Press will hold a Celebration Oct. 24 at 4 p.m. In the Fine Arts Center Atrium. Christopher Daly, author of “Media Wars: Weaponizing the News in the Age of Trump,” will speak briefly. Jim Wald of Amherst told me it’s free and open to the public.

For a change of pace the Annual Trivia Bee, sponsored by the Amherst Education Foundation, will be held Oct. 25 in the Regional Middle School Auditorium. The event begins with a student round beginning at 5:30 p.m. It’s a free and fun evening with some very interesting costumes.

Carlton and Nancy Brose of Amherst sent a card from Pennsylvania where they attended a wedding that included three generations from both sides.

Shirley Stevens told me there are 10 seats left for the Nov. 14 New York bus trip. Call her at 253-7269 if interested.
