Reminder: real estate taxes are due Nov. 1, which is a Thursday.

Halloween is Wednesday, Oct. 31, the day before the taxes are due so you can have something sweet to offset writing the big check. Unless you have a small tax bill.

If you are driving Halloween night please be aware of children. Some may be wearing dark costumes which are difficult to see. They could also be distracted and not watching where they are going in the street.

The garden reports are done for the year. I still have parsley in a pot on the patio but its days are numbered.

On the whole, there was less blight than last year so it was a plus year for the vegetables. Next year I will stalk the cosmos and lisianthus since they grew so tall and drooped this year.

Like baseball, there is always next year in gardening.

Bernadette Jones of Amherst sent me an email that UNICEF boxes are available at most of the schools and at Amherst Pediatrics or call her at 549-6522.

With the many refugees, earthquakes and hurricanes there is so much need, she wrote.

Kathie Pipczynski of Hadley sent me an email about a bus trip she is organizing to New York on Dec. 2. The pick up spots are the Red Roof Inn in South Deerfield and Walmart in Northampton. The $52 ticket includes, door prizes, raffles, snacks and movie on the bus. This is her 12th trip she has organized, she wrote.

To reserve a seat call her at 413-461-1189 or email: kpipski@gmail.com.

She didn’t include the pick up time in her email but you can call her for details.
