Happy Presidents Day. Many town buildings and some business are closed Monday so check the listings.

Personally, I liked it better when we celebrated Feb. 12 and 22 separately and on the actual dates. It’s nice to have a random day off just like snow closings.

My Orchard Valley neighbor Adrienne Terrizzi sent me an email about a party. She wrote that there will be a Town Meeting “Thank You Party” on Feb. 24, from 6-8 p.m. at the Munson Memorial Library in South Amherst. She said the event includes special recognition to Town Moderators, Town Meeting Coordinating Committees and long-serving Town Meeting members. Besides a special emcee, the evening includes music, fun, food and cake. Family and friends invited, she added.

I was a Town Meeting member decades ago so will attend. But I’m really going for the cake.

Call Adrienne if you want to bring food.

Andrea Schmid, lead organizer at the Pioneer Valley Workers Center, will discuss the PVWC mission and current campaigns to build the power of low-wage workers and immigrants in western Massachusetts at the Amherst Woman’s Club on Feb. 18 at 1:30 p.m. She replaces the scheduled speaker who was unable to attend, according to club president Charlene Moran, who sent me an email notice.

Schmid will talk about the organizing campaigns of the two PVWC Worker Committees in Hampshire County and Springfield to advance labor and immigrant rights, addressing the roots of exploitation. She will also discuss the current sanctuary campaigns to fight the deportations of Lucio Perez and Irida Kakhtiranova, and ways community members can get involved to support immigrant and workers rights.

Full disclosure, I am a member of the Woman’s Club.

I started to do my federal income tax and it seems easier. There are half pages and fewer boxes. There is no longer a 1040A or easy form. I still have to get to the bottom line, to determine if I pay or not. The eraser is my best friend when I do this.

It’s an adult snow day project. The events I planned to attend Tuesday were canceled.
