The Lehrer Report: April 30, 2021

Monday, May 03, 2021

Reminder: Real estate taxes are due Monday, May 3.

Garden report: I planted beets, leeks, onions and lettuce. The hosta and columbine are up. My Thanksgiving cactus has new buds and now I have a May Day cactus as well.

Jeff Bohne, moderator of South Congregational Church, sent me the menu for the next takeout dinner, which will be held May 8 with pickup between 5 and 6 p.m. It’s a chicken or spinach enchilada dinner with rice, black beans, salsa verde and flan. The cost is $15.

The order deadline is “Cinco de Mayo,” Wednesday, May 5. Call 253-2977 or online at: www.southchurchfiddlerspantry.bigcartel.com/.

Live music is back downtown. The UMass Bach Festival featured a string group on the common last Saturday that attracted many listeners. Unfortunately, the Sunday concert at the Strong House Museum was canceled because of rain.

Another free outdoor concert is scheduled May 1 noon at Sweetser Park. The UMass Wind Ensemble, conducted by Matthew Westgate, will perform. Bring your own chair or blanket and check your distance.

I look forward to the Amherst Community Band playing this summer.

A sign of a somewhat return to normalcy: Traffic was stopped when a school bus was letting off students. How long has it been that that has happened? Seeing something so common and usual was refreshing.
