Garden report: The day lilies are in bud. These are the common orange ones. I have a nice cranberry colored one, but no buds yet. The spiderwort has bloomed. The string I used to mark the carrot row in order not to hoe carrot sprouts instead of weeds is gone. I think a bird will be creating a nest with it. I have metal stakes ***

The Juneteenth holiday that celebrates the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take control of the state to ensure that all enslaved people were freed will be celebrated over the weekend in Amherst. A walk begins Saturday at 11 a.m. at the West Cemetery with stops at various locations ending at the Goodwin Memorial AME Zion Church at 3 p.m. On Sunday, there will be a program on the Town Common beginning at noon with food, music and vendors.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Summer officially begins on June 21. The first concert by the Amherst Community Band, directed by Tim Anderson, is June 24 at 6:30 p.m. at Sweetser Park. Bring a picnic along with a chair or blanket.
