Indoor garden report: The Thanksgiving cactus came through and there will be flowers on Thanksgiving Day. In addition, the coleus cuttings I put in water have roots and now I can pot them.

The Merry Maple took decades to grow, yet it was cut down in less than a day. I took pictures to send to my children and friends who have moved. The memorial the night before was well done.

A new tree will be lit for a Very Merry Maple Lighting Friday, Dec. 2, on the Common. The event will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and include music by the Amherst Regional Middle School Chorus and the UMass Minuteman Marching Band, as well as crafts on the North Common, cider and doughnuts. Santa arrives by horse-drawn carriage this year, not a firetruck.

Children and adults can visit with Santa at the Strong House Museum on Amity Street.

The St. Nicholas Bazaar will be held Saturday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grace Episcopal Church on the Common in Amherst, according to an email from Joan O’Brien.

The fair features Christmas wreaths and decor, collectibles, books, antiques, jewelry, white elephants, artwork, toys and more. For information, call 256-6754.

On Saturday, Dec. 2, participating downtown stores and restaurants will offer a 20 percent discount. In the past the sale was known as Card Day, but it is now called Merry Day. The intent is the same — support our local businesses. These are the businesses that provide local charities with gift certificates and auction items for fundraisers. It’s time to pay them back.
