Yom Kippur greetings to our Jewish friends and neighbors.

Monday, Oct. 14 is a holiday. Public offices, schools, libraries and banks will be closed. The stores will be open with the color orange dominating with pumpkin and Halloween items.

I was in the Netherlands one April and the color orange was everywhere. My first thought was Halloween. No, the monarchy in the country is called the House of Orange and April is when they celebrate the family.

Garden report: I made 2½ quarts of applesauce (not my apples, bought at the farmers market). Next, potato leek soup. I will make stock with my celery stalks. I found a volunteer tomato plant in a hanging planter. There were three little green tomatoes. The bounty continues.

Monday morning provided a seldom heard sound — falling rain. It’s been a long time hearing the drops hit the leaves on the trees and bushes.

Kathy Lanza sent me an email about a pickleball tournament fundraiser for the Jones Library sponsored by the Friends of the Jones Library and Peoples Bank.

It will be held Sunday, Oct. 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Bay Road MultiSport Center, Hampshire College. The event includes prizes, raffles and refreshments. The cost is $60 per person. Visit joneslibrary.org/pickleball to register.

Pam Simpson of Amherst delivered a postcard with a photo of the coliseum in Rome to me at the Amherst Farmers Market. She has returned from a visit to Italy.
