Veterans Day events in Hampshire County

Amherst

A breakfast to salute veterans, organized by the Veterans Council of Northampton and with support from the Amherst Senior Center, starts Monday at 9 a.m. at the Bangs Community Center, 70 Boltwood Walk.

All veterans who come will be served a free meal, while there is a $10 donation requested for other guests.

A ceremony featuring guest speakers, including state Rep. Mindy Domb and veteran Marvin Jones, will take place at the breakfast, followed by the raising and lowering of the American flag at the flagpole on the North Common, which will also include the playing of the “Bells of Peace” and “Taps,” and additional remarks.

Tickets for the breakfast need to be obtained in advance by calling the senior center at 259-3060 or the Central Hampshire Veterans Services at 587-1299.

Easthampton

On Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m. the Easthampton Rotary Club will host a free breakfast for all veterans at the American Legion Post 224 at 190 Pleasant St. 

On Monday, starting at 10:30 a.m. the American Legion will be going to the three war monuments in the city, first the Civil War monument at the Old Town Hall, next the veterans memorial at Brookside Cemetery and finally they will finish at the World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam memorial at the Emily Williston Memorial Library. At each stop, the Legion will fire multiple volleys and plays “Taps.” An awards ceremony will begin at the American Legion at approximately 11:30 a.m. A lunch that is free and open to the public will follow. 

Northampton

On Saturday, at 9 a.m., there will be a free breakfast in Florence for veterans at the Elks Lodge 997 on Spring Street, where Eric Segundo, the previous state commander of the VFW of Massachusetts, is scheduled to speak.

On Monday, the annual Veterans Day parade returns to downtown and will start at 11 a.m. in Lampron Park at Bridge Street School and end in Pulaski Park on Main Street.  

Hatfield

A small ceremony will take place Monday at 11 a.m. in front of Memorial Town Hall, 59 Main St. 

South Hadley

A ceremony held at Michael E. Smith Middle School will feature guest speakers, a wreath-laying, “Taps,” and a presentation of the national colors to honor veterans. The ceremony will also include a “Bells of Peace” program, which is part of a national initiative that specifically honors veterans of World War I.

The ceremony, hosted by the VFW Post 3104, the American Legion Post 260 and the Songs of the American Legion Squadron 260, will begin Monday at 11 a.m. Light refreshments and coffee will be provided beginning at 10:15 a.m.

The VFW will also present awards to winners of its “Patriots Pen” essay contest and “Teacher of the Year,” and students from Michael E. Smith Middle School will give a presentation about their trip to Washington, D.C.

Belchertown

A Veterans Day ceremony will begin on Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Town Common and proceed to the Belchertown High School Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium at 11 a.m.

The programming will also feature performances by the Chestnut Hill Community School Band and Chorus and guest speaker Major Mandy Ritter, USAF. Light refreshments will follow the ceremony.

A Veterans Day assembly will also be held at Belchertown High School in the auditorium on Friday at 9:15 a.m. 

Granby

The American Legion Post 266 will host a ceremony at the Town Boulder off of West Street on Monday at 9 a.m. 

The annual ceremony will include bagpipes and remarks.

Chesterfield 

A Veterans Day breakfast will be held at the Chesterfield Community Center on Monday at 9 a.m.

The event is free and planned to last an hour at the center located at 400 Main Road. All Hilltown veterans and spouses are encouraged to attend.

The event is sponsored by the Chesterfield Grange and those interested can RSVP by calling Maryanne Coleman at (413) 296-4787.

Westhampton

On Monday, the Committee on Aging will be hosting a Veterans Day breakfast at Outlook Farm from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. The breakfast will be free for Westhampton Veterans.

Williamsburg

A Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at the Williamsburg Veterans Memorial on Monday at 11 a.m.

The event will last no longer than an hour and will feature remarks. 

Holyoke

Holyoke will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at the War Memorial Building in Holyoke located at 310 Appleton St. The day begins with a breakfast at American Legion Post 351, which is open to the public. The event at the War Memorial Building begins at 9 a.m.

Other events taking place in the city include a Veterans Day service at The United Congregational Church of Holyoke at 10 a.m. And the Soldiers' Home will hold a Veterans Day of Service for 80 students and their teachers from 8 a.m. to noon.

The Holyoke Mall will be welcoming Friends of Agawam Veterans Cemetery on Monday. The group will be on the upper level of the mall near Target from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They will be seeking sponsors for wreaths, which they intend to place on the headstone of every veteran at the cemetery.

*In honor of Veterans Day, the Baker-Polito administration is waiving all parking fees for all visitors to state parks throughout the commonwealth on Monday. Interpretive programming will be offered at state parks during the upcoming holiday weekend. Visitors are encouraged to participate in self-guided walks and hikes within the state parks system, where there are numerous veterans memorials, military forts, and other notable sites.
