New paintings by Donnabelle Casis

Donnabelle Casis, a Filipina-American artist who lives and works in Florence, is exhibiting “datik,” a collection of new paintings, from June 1-30 at Readywipe Gallery in Holyoke. The title “datik” is an invented word, drawn from datum, datu and batik. “Datum refers to a piece of information; datu is a title which denotes the ancient rulers of numerous indigenous peoples throughout the Philippines; and batik is a method of producing colored designs on textiles using a wax-resist method,” explains Casis. Through patterns and geometry, her paintings explore themes of personal identity and ritual in both ancient and modern cultures, as press notes detail: “Large and small, intimate and vast, they are part of an expansive framework of disperse elements. Filipino tribal tattoos and textiles, trajes de luces (suits of light) or bullfighting costumes, and facial recognition software, inform [the artist’s] aesthetic decisions.” Casis will have an opening reception Friday, June 1, 6-8 p.m. at Readywipe Gallery, Studio 306, Baustein Building, 532 Main St., in Holyoke.
