Memorial Day is celebrated Monday, a time to remember all those who served our country. A fitting tribute would be to do something nice for someone: send a card, visit a friend in the nursing home or for the environment: recycle, plant a tree. One suggestion that Sherry Wilson included in her gardening columns was to plant an extra row of vegetables to donate to the Survival Center or Not Bread Alone.

Garden report: the iris and crane bill geranium have bloomed. The tomato, pepper and eggplant have been planted. The lettuce have been stagnant, too wet.

Alice Swift of Amherst sent a card with many water views of the Cote Basque and Biarritz in France. She was visiting her son, who lives in France, but the main attraction was the four grandchildren. They spent a day in Biarritz walking on the beach admiring the blue water and eating in a cafe.

Bernice and Jon Rosenthal of Amherst also sent a card from France of Norte Dame in Paris.

They arrived the da after the fire and stayed within viewing distance of the cathedral. "People are in awe and saddened. The scaffolds are already bridging the walls where the roof was. The symbol of France will be restored," they wrote.

By the time you read this you will have noticed all the equipment on the Town Common. The Rotary is again sponsoring the Community Fair that began Wednesday and runs until Monday. Hours are 3-10 p.m through Sunday and 12-10 on Monday. Come out and see and enjoy your friends and neighbors after such a long winter.

Surprise and embarrassment- my reaction to getting a pink real estate tax bill because the payment was overdue. I neglected to remind residents that real estate taxes were due May 1. Therefore, I forgot to pay mine. I don't think I ever missed a payment. It was easy the first 25 years since the bank paid the bill with the mortgage payment.
