AMHERST — An Amherst native and a Navy veteran are the newest members of the Amherst Police Department.

Matthew J. Ziomek, 23, the son of David and Maria Ziomek of Amherst, and Jose J. Diaz-Gutierrez, 27, the son of Antonio and Rufina Diaz of Peabody, were recently appointed as patrol officers. Following last Friday’s graduation from the Western Massachusetts Regional Police Academy in Springfield, the officers have begun their 12-week field officer training.

Diaz-Gutierrez, who earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Salem State University in 2016, enlisted in the Navy in 2007 and served on the Aircraft Crash and Rescue Team.

A Southwick resident, Diaz-Gutierrez previously worked as a public safety officer at the University of Hartford.

Ziomek earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from SUNY-Plattsburgh, New York in 2016. Ziomek previously was employed as a community service officer for Nantucket Police.
